| Billy: "It's a very key song. That song was definitely a window to other things. The chord changes are very Pumpkin-like, reminiscent of other things, and I was reluctant to start singing over it because I was afraid the moment I opened my mouth it was going to end up sounding even more like other stuff. So I kept putting it off and putting it off and it finally reached the point where I had to start singing because the band never knew where to do the changes. That melody that you hear is the melody that came out. It's the first thing I ever sang. "There's another interesting thing about the song: [producer] Flood goes to me and James, 'Go out and play the guitar parts. I think it would be better if you both played at the same time out there so you react off each other.' We go out and we do it--just to have it, not even thinking that that's the part you're going to keep. Then when we go back to it, like two months later, we've gotten used to it, so what you hear on 'Porcelina' is literally what we did off the top of our heads." |
